Famous Ford Flops

American automakers sometimes get the brunt of the criticism for producing models that are ugly, useless, or even downright dangerous. Ford has had its share of beasts through the years in addition to several winners including the current Mustang for which demand cannot be met. For the fun of it lets take a look at some of the Ford models that have been derided down through the years.

Model T What?! How can the car that introduced mass production make the list? Well, the car was fine, but Mr. Henry Fords statement, you can have any color you want as long as it is black has been attributed with the rise of General Motors [who gave its customers a choice in colors] which eventually dethroned Ford as the top automaker in the world. No, the Model T was fine, but Mr. Fords marketing strategy was not.

Edsel In September 1957, Ford launched a new division Edsel and introduced to America one of the weirdest looking cars. Sporting a horse-collar shaped grille some equated it with a toilet seat the Edsel line was hyped by Ford and rejected by consumers wholeheartedly. Expecting to build 200,000 Edsels in its first year of production, only 63,000 were built. Other radical aspects of the Edsel included a floating speedometer that glowed upon reaching a particular speed and an awkward push button transmission with controls attached to the hub of the steering wheel. Even with a quick makeover completed in time for the next model year, the Edsel limped along only to be pulled one month after the third model year vehicles were released.

Pinto Hey, even I owned one! With a 2.3L inline four cylinder paired with a 4 speed manny tranny, the Pinto was Fords answer during the 1970s to the onslaught of Japanese cars flooding the market. The compact rear wheel drive coupe, three door hatchback, or wagon sold fairly well until disaster hit: the revelation that the Pintos gas tank was capable of exploding during a rear impact scared buyers away. Mercifully pulled after the 1980 model year; replaced by the popular Escort.

Mustang II Ford tarnished the Mustang name during the 1970s with this forgettable and ugly model. Resembling a bloated and stretched Pinto, the Mustang II was weak, poorly made, and a terrible competitor against its arch rival, the Camaro. All was forgiven by the early 1980s with the return of a newly designed Mustang. Todays Mustang, on the other hand, is a sold-out success story as it took its styling cues from a Mustang of another era: the fastback cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Before you point your finger at Ford, dont forget to recall some truly forgettable models, foreign and domestic. The Toyota Van was panned for its ugly styling and for having an engine that had to be dropped from the engine bay in order to do a tune up; the Chevy Vega a Pinto wannabe; AMCs Pacer the Jetsons car; the Suzuki Samurai and Isuzu Rodeo flip over specialists; the Yugo a thinly redone 1960s era Fiat; and countless other cars not worth the mention. You hope that automakers learn from their mistakes, but dont count on it. Maybe in another generation we will see a truly forgettable Ford show up, but for now there isnt one in the line up...hooray for that!

Practical Things to Know About Custom Made Golf Clubs

You can have golf clubs custom-made for you at some golf shops. These clubs are made with heads that are not from the major manufacturers but, for the most part, they have the same types of shafts and grips made by the most popular grip-makers.

Clubs can be made to fit your various requirements and often cost less than a brand-name set of clubs. This is a good choice if you do not mind playing with clubs that do not have a big brand name on them.

You could build the clubs yourself. Components are sold at many places, along with instructions on how to build your own set. It is not that hard to do, but you will need several pieces of equipment and supplies to do it.

For starters, you will need a vise, rubber shaft clamp, epoxy, a shaft cut-off wheel to trim the shafts, grip tape, grip solvent to install the grips, very coarse sandpaper to rough up the tips of the shafts (so that the epoxy will bond properly with the steel or graphite), heads, shafts, grips, protective glasses to avoid eye injury (from grip solvent, epoxy, etc), paper towels, some sort of pan to collect excess grip solvent.

That is a basic list. How much you require depends on how many clubs you want to make and whether there are other things you want to add to the clubs. Generally, use graphite if you want light clubs, especially in the driver.

If the total weight of the clubs is not important to you, it is good idea to use graphite shafts in your woods, but lightweight steel shafts in your irons. This is the best combination for distance and control.

If you cant afford top of the line clubs, there are a couple of alternatives for you:

1. Buy used clubs. 2. Build you own clubs. Go to one of the club component suppliers for supplies and instructions on how to do it. 3. Re-grip your current clubs with new grips. Most golf stores provide this service, or you can do it yourself. 4. Buy yourself a top-notch glove. This combination will make your clubs feel much better because the grips and glove will feel more tacky and the clubs will be easier to control.

Isnt that what we all wantto live a vibrant and successful life?

Celebrating ourselves is good for us. Its good for our families, our friends and our communities - that positive energy is both life affirming and infectious. What better way to celebrate than to find little ways to indulge yourself and those you love? Women sometimes get so caught up in taking care of others that often we are the last to be cared for. Lets start with taking care of ourselves and each other. Here are some suggestions to get you started. As you go though this list, write down the ones that speak to you, as well as the ones you think of in your journal.

  1. What are you grateful for? Start a gratitude notebook (or section of your journal) and list all the things you are grateful for. Read it whenever you are feeling overwhelmed by life.
  2. Plant a tree in honor of someone you care about. Better yet, plant an orchard.
  3. Giving does wonders for yourself and others. Consider volunteering at your local school, senior center or library.
  4. Do you have a tub? Candles? Some quiet piano music? Can you say aahhh?
  5. Become a blood, organ and/or bone marrow donor.
  6. Daydream! This is vitally important.
  7. Manifest your life! Visualize what it is that you want. Get all the colors, smells and textures, emotions involved. Bring it to life. Remember we are what we think about.
  8. Be in silence.
  9. Send yourself flowers.
  10. Exercise! Being physically fit is the ultimate way to vibrant living!
  11. Make bubbles.
  12. Invest in yourself (savings or retirement account, education)!
  13. Go out into the night, away from the city lights and watch the meteor showers.
  14. Be outrageous in all that you do.
  15. Throw a party FOR your best friends.
  16. Dont wait for tomorrow.
  17. Invite a special friend and splurge on a good meal.
  18. Run through the sprinklers!
  19. Find a photo booth in a mall and take some fun pictures of yourself.
  20. Treat yourself to a spa day. Dont forget the pedicure.
  21. Learn to accept gifts from your friends.
  22. Have breakfast in bed.
  23. Have a belly laugh!
  24. Curl up, in front of the fire, with hot chocolate and a really good book.
  25. Volunteer at your local soup kitchen, food bank.
  26. Adopt a park, beach, or community space in your town.
  27. Be the first to venture outside after a snow storm.

When Love Is In the Air

We all know about June weddings. Anniversaries are also a great way to celebrate life. During the warm weather, it is sometimes easier for families to get together for one of the monumental dates - such as 25, 50 and 75 years. They are special indeed and need to be treated as such.

Buffets with a touch of elegance are always a sure fire way to success. A menu featuring family favorites as well as coconut ice cream balls tinted in the color of the wedding party (taken from photographs if it is a surprise). Assorted "tea" sandwiches, golden wedding rings (recipe on bottom), and fruit or frosty punch. A bit of lace and hearts (no, it's not corny) and a cake a bit on the shy side of a wedding cake, but just as special.

The invitations should be silver for 25 years, gold for 50 years and diamond for anything over 60 years. Candles, roses, and old photographs dress up the table and add to the memories. Using the family silver service and punch bowl will also give everyone a feeling of special. The day, like the original wedding day, will be remembered in the hearts of the wedding couple, but also in all the guests that are invited.

There can be a gift table, but usually gifts are not necessary. A nice touch would be if those invited gave something nostalgic, something that the couple would find endearing, or even amusing. If you go to second-hand shops, there are so many items that are a token of the past. They can be cleaned up, polished, painted, or decorated. These small but dear gifts will just add more love to the occasion. So, when anniversary bells ring, give the best anniversary buffet. It is worth the work and the thanks will be the true smiles of appreciation from everyone.

Wedding Bells:

1 8-oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened, maraschino cherry juice, unsliced sandwich loaf Thoroughly blend cream cheese w/enough cherry juice to make it of spreading consistency. Slice the sandwich loaf thinly. With a cookie cutter in the shape of a bell, cut the bread. Spread filling on the cut-outs. Trim with cherry slices if desired. A tasty treat that is also a fantastic decoration.

Golden Wedding Rings:

1 3-oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened, 3 tbs. mayonnaise, 1/2 cup chopped pecans, 1/2 cup drained crushed pineapple Blend cream cheese and mayonnaise (or use salad dressing of your choice). Add the nuts and pineapple. Bake your favorite nut bread and use a 1-lb. coffee can. Fill each can 2/3 full. When cool, remove from the can and slice thinly. Remove center from each slice with a doughnut cutter. Spread generously with the cream cheese mixture. Or, you can use regular bread and slice with the doughnut cutter, remove center, and spread with mixture. Lay on a bed of parsley and you have a beautiful table setting that will add eye appeal to your buffet.
